About John

I first started getting into photography in 2013, when I went on my first solo trip to Machu Picchu. It had always been a dream destination for me, and I knew I needed a decent camera to capture every moment of that once-in-a-lifetime experience. Since then, my passion for photography has continued to grow, and I have fallen in love with capturing landscapes. I have been fortunate enough to travel to many fantastic places and capture their beauty through my camera lens.

My gear

Nikon Z5

I bought this before going to Iceland in the Autumn of 2022. It’s been a massive upgrade from my older Nikon D3200, which has been my workhorse for the past 10 years.

I chose the Z5 over the Z6II mainly due to cost and the addition SD card slot (I like the back up options of having two SD card slots), this left me more money to spend on some good lenses.

Nikkor Z 24-120mm F4 S

This is my new favourite lens, my go to lens for everything. It’s super sharp on all focal lengths, lightweight and have great focal length options.

Nikkor 24-200mm F4-6.3

This used to be my main lens, before getting the 24-120mm. I have taken most of my portfolio pieces using this lense.

I tend to do a lot of travel photography and hiking. So I have opted for something more versatile and lightweight to travel with. I find if i shoot at 24mm I get the sharpest photos with an aperture overall is either f/5.6 or f/8, which is pretty good for landscapes.

Other lenses

Nikkor 50mm f1.8s Prime lens

This is a new addition to my lens collection, I’m starting to venture more into Portraits and nighttime street photography. This should give me a pretty good balance for both.

Nikkor 28mm f2.8

This was a very last minute purchase before heading to Iceland. I didn’t have a lens that would go lover than f4, which wasn’t ideal for the aurora lights.
I’m very glad i bought this lens, i was lucky enough to have the aurora lights 3/5 nights in Iceland and managed to take some stunning photos.

Nikon 24-50mm f4-6.3

This was the stock lens that come with the camera, I don’t really use it much but i do take it everywhere with me. It’s super small and lightweight which means it’s a great back up lens to take on my travels if the worst was to happen and I damaged any of my other lenses.

Essential gear

Shimoda Action X50

Really good bag for longer hikes with more gear!

ARTCISE 63" Carbon Fiber Tripod

My new go to tripod, it’s the same weight as my old K&F tripod but a lot sturdier and can reach 63” high which is perfect for a tall person like me.

K&F Magnetic filters

I don’t always use filters, but when I do it’s normally a polariser or a Neutral Density ND6.

Old gear (selling in 2024)

K&F 67" Aluminum Tripod

K&F Concept 67" Aluminum Tripod Monopod with Ball Head.

Lowepro 350AW

Really good bag, great for shorter hikes and good for traveling through airports. I wish the top pocket was a bit bigger, can just about fit a fleece or coat into it.
